About Us

Uppity Heifer is a literary movement launched in May 2025.

They called us uppity when we remembered too much. When we carried ourselves like we knew something. When we refused to let the story die in somebody else's mouth. This is a newsletter built on sacred refusal to allow liars to control the narrative.

Every week, we take what's happening in the news and we go looking for the root. We follow the thing back to where it started, back past the headline and the press conference and the think piece, back to the soil, the sermon, the silence that has always held more truth than what gets printed.

This is the history behind the news with a little seasoning on it, the kind of truth that may be hard to hold at first, but once understood, changes the way you see the world. The storytelling we do here is the kind that moves. The kind your grandmother carried in her chest and only gave to certain people at certain hours. The kind that, once you hear it, won't let you see anyone or anything the same.

Uppity Heifer is written by Leslie T. Grover -- storyteller, author, teacher, daughter of the Black resistance movement, and student of everything this country tried to bury. She writes because the record is incomplete and the silence is too loud. Somebody has to say it plainly. Somebody has to tell the truth.
